The Lakhe Project
A series of illustrations that reimagines the mythological figure of Lakhe, a flesh-eating demon worshiped as a protective deity in Newari culture. One particular story I explore is one of Lakhe falling in love with a girl from town. I have reinterpreted these mythological figures as fantasy characters, incorporating traditional apparel native to the culture.
One of the key elements of the Lakhe tradition is the ornate and fearful mask worn by performers during the Lakhe dance. I have taken various liberties with the design of the Lakhe, depicting it as a smoky, ethereal being that flows throughout the composition of the piece, framing the character.
I explore the mask more closely in my second piece, focusing on its curves and lighting.
Through this series of illustrations that reimagine the mythological figure of Lakhe, I have strived to pay homage to my Nepali culture and heritage while incorporating my passion for concept and design.
